    About Us

The Speech and Debate program at Guyer High School comprises one of the largest academic competition teams in Denton ISD. Members of the speech and debate program take courses in Debate, Public Speaking, and Oral Interpretation and compete at the local, state, and national levels.

Founded in 2005 by Ms. Dixie Waldo and led Ms. Karen Gossett from 2007 to 2015, the program has enjoyed considerable success particularly in Extemporaneous Speaking, Congressional Debate, and Oral Interpretation.

Since 2015, the program has been directed by Dr. Jason Sykes. This year, the team’s 55 members will attend more than 30 tournaments ranging from local invitationals to national qualifiers and state championships.

Recruitment will continue at Harpool and Crownover Middle Schools this year. Eighth grade students may join through application or teacher nomination and may conduct schedule changes with Guyer counselors. Should you have any questions related to the program, please contact one of our coaches.
