The Shultz Elem Science Fair is a tradition that goes back far into the school’s history. Our campus is recognized for its successful and inquisitive students, and the Science Fair preparations are integrated into the science curriculum for 5^th grade. The event is a collaboration between all of our invested populations at this school: students, teachers, and parents working on the projects; PTA providing the funds (including the purchase of backboards for each student to use if desired) and volunteers from UNT, TWU, NCTC and throughout the neighborhood and community who come serve as volunteer judges each year.

We know that the process of scientific discovery (especially when trying to do it together with your student) can be challenging, so we want to make the process as straightforward as possible.  Please read the packet below for specific rules, but here are some essential things to know:

• Science Fair projects are required for all fifth graders. It is optional for all children in grades PK - 4th grade.  
• STEAM night (January 25, 6:00-7:00 p.m.) is a great opportunity to come to meet the science fair coordinators, pick up your free backboard from the PTA and ask any questions you might have.
• If the experiment uses an animal or a human, you will need to check with the Science Fair coordinators before doing it. Depending on the project, it may require documentation from the participant’s parents/guardian or a veterinarian. Join Mrs. Yarbrough, Mrs. Korsmo, and Ms. Cozart in the library on Jan. 25 from 5:30-6:00 p.m. before the STEAM family night for information. 
• To qualify for an award, the project must follow the scientific method. This includes demonstrating that the experiment went through three trials. Your student is encouraged to follow a rubric that can be provided at our STEAM night, or by requesting one from his/her teacher. 
• All projects must be turned in by Friday, May 3rd at 8 a.m. Turn the project into your child’s teacher.
• All participants get a ribbon to reward them for their efforts, and in addition, we also award 1^st, 2^nd, 3^rd, and Honorable Mention for each grade (depending on the entry number; sometimes grade levels are combined during judging), as well as over 45 special awards like “Best Use of Biology,” “Tastiest,” etc.
• We will have an awards ceremony at the school on Thursday, May 9th at 6 p.m. in the Shultz library. After the awards ceremony, everyone is invited to walk around the display hall to see the many Science Fair projects completed by Mustang students!
• Student display boards will need to be picked up on May 10
