Denton ISD has selected Ronald Sterling Jr. as the next principal of Myers Middle School, effective immediately. Mr. Sterling replaces Trey Peden, who was recently named the associate principal of Denton High School.
A graduate of the University of North Texas, Mr. Sterling now returns to Denton with 24 years of experience in public education. In addition to earning his degree from UNT, Mr. Sterling was also a member of the Mean Green football team from 1998-2000.
He has most recently served as the Executive Director of Student Services in Houston ISD.
“Denton is basically home for me,” Mr. Sterling said. “My family and I love the Denton area, and this is a great opportunity. I have spent the last several years working closely with both principals and students, and I am ecstatic to be back on campus. I believe in building relationships, high standards, excellence and accountability.”
As the Executive Director of Student Services in Houston ISD, Mr. Sterling worked directly with principals to facilitate the design, coordination and development of assessment procedures that produced accountability for achievement of all students. In addition, he also assisted with developing board policies related to Student Services that assured compliance with state law
Mr. Sterling began his career as a special education teacher in Arp ISD in 2000. He then spent a year as a teacher and coach at Huntsville High School before returning to Arp ISD in 2002 in a similar role.
From 2005-2012, Mr. Sterling served as the assistant principal of John Tyler High School. In 2012, Mr. Sterling began serving as the associate principal of Little Elm High School – a position he held for two years.
In 2014, Mr. Sterling became the principal of Sunnyvale High School. Over the next five years, Mr. Sterling helped lead Sunnyvale to a top-5 finish in the UIL Lone Star Cup three times. Under his guidance, Sunnyvale’s SAT and ACT scores also increased three consecutive years, while school-wide discipline incidents declined.
From 2019-2023, Mr. Sterling served as the Executive Director of Student Services in Forney ISD. In this role, Mr. Sterling coordinated and directed professional development, planned and assisted in establishing district goals related to the Student Services program, and supervised the district’s transportation department.
Mr. Sterling received his bachelor’s degree from the University of North Texas. He later earned his master’s degree in education administration from Grand Canyon University.
“Mr. Sterling brings a wealth of experience to Myers Middle School,” said Luci Schulz, Area Superintendent. “He has a proven track record of excellence, raising student achievement and exceptional leadership. We are thrilled to have him join Denton ISD.”
