Denton ISD’s Board of School Trustees approved the hire of Kent Laster to be Braswell High School’s new head football coach and athletic coordinator at a board meeting on Tuesday night.
Most recently the head coach and athletic coordinator at University High School in Waco ISD, Coach Laster guided the Trojans to their first playoff victory since 2009 last season. Coach Laster replaces former Braswell head coach and athletic coordinator Cody Moore, who resigned in March and was the first head coach in Braswell history.
“We are excited for Coach Laster to join our Denton ISD family,” Denton ISD Athletic Director Joey Florence said. “Coach Laster has a long history of success, and we’re looking forward to him continuing to build on the foundation that has already been laid at Braswell High School.”
Prior to his stint at University High School, Coach Laster spent three seasons as the head coach at Central High School in Little Rock, Ark. from 2018-2020. During his tenure, Coach Laster led the program to its first playoff berth in five seasons, including a first-round playoff victory in 2020.
In his three seasons at the helm of Central, Coach Laster increased student participation in the football program. In his final two years as head coach, Coach Laster matched the school’s win total from 2015-2018 combined.
In addition to his head coaching experience, Coach Laster served as an assistant coach at Weatherford High School from 2007-2009 and as the offensive coordinator at Frisco Heritage High School from 2009-2018.
Coach Laster is married to his wife, Anverly. They have two daughters: Kennedy, who is 12 and Kinsly, who is 9.

I know there are some eager and excited young men and women in the athletic program, and I am honored to come to a school district that has an outstanding reputation in all areas – academics, fine arts, community service and athletics.”
