Frequently Asked Questions
-
Who Should Complete A Transfer Application?
A transfer application should only be completed by a parent or legal guardian (district employees included) who wants their child to attend a school that is DIFFERENT than the school zoned for their current address.
If a student is currently ON an approved INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFER (lives INSIDE Denton ISD) or INTER-DISTRICT TRANSFER (lives OUTSIDE Denton ISD), and is not moving to another campus, the parent does NOT need to apply for a transfer unless the family has moved to a different address.
If a student is currently ON an approved INTRA-DISTRICT TRANSFER (lives INSIDE Denton ISD) or INTER-DISTRICT TRANSFER (lives OUTSIDE Denton ISD), and the student is moving from 5th to 6th grade and/or 8th to 9th grade the parent MUST complete a new transfer request application. This includes district employees.
-
What is a Intra-district transfer?
An intra-district transfer is a transfer for students who live within the Denton ISD school district.
-
What is a inter-district transfer?
An inter-district transfer is a transfer for students who live outside of the Denton ISD school district.
-
When is a request to remain considered?
A Request to Remain is considered when a student moves outside of the district or into a different Denton ISD attendance zone DURING THE SCHOOL YEAR.
Request to Remain are only valid for the current school year in which the petition occurred.
If a student is approved for a request to remain, this school year, the parent MUST apply for a transfer during the open transfer window to remain at the campus for subsequent years.
If a student moves during the summer or fails to apply for a transfer during the open transfer window, the Request to Remain option is not available. The student must apply for a transfer during the open transfer window.
-
How are transfer request reviewed?
When reviewing petitions for student transfers, the district will consider each request on an individual basis; however, the regulations below are in place to ensure consistency in our process.
The transfer petitions will be considered by the Board’s designee during the specified window each year. If the designee denies the transfer request, the parent may file an appeal to the Superintendent’s designee during the open appeal window (Secondary only).
A transfer request is a privilege. An approved transfer to a specific elementary school does not guarantee approval to a specific middle school, just as a transfer approval to a specific middle school does not guarantee approval to a specific high school.
