What is HB 1481?
HB 1481 is a new state law passed by the 89th Texas Legislature requiring school districts to prohibit students from using personal communications devices during the instructional day.

When does this law go into effect?
Denton ISD will implement HB 1481 beginning the first day of school on August 12, 2025.

Can my child bring their cell phone or other device to school?
Your child may bring their device to school, but it must be turned off or silenced and securely stowed away in their backpack or locker throughout the entire instructional day. The instructional day includes passing periods and lunch during school hours.

What is the “instructional day?”
The instructional day is from “bell-to-bell”:

Elementary: 7:40 AM - 3:00 PM

Middle School: 8:15 AM - 3:35 PM

High School: 8:50 AM - 4:10 PM

What if my child needs to reach me or I need to reach my child?
In the event your child needs to reach you, the campus front office staff can assist.
Should you need to reach your child with an urgent message, please contact your child’s school to get a message to your student. When calling your child’s school, you’ll be guided through a brief menu to help direct your call to the appropriate department. If you’re unsure which option to select, a campus receptionist will always be available to assist and ensure your call is routed correctly. Please make every effort to communicate planned appointments or early checkouts before the school day begins.

How do I work with my child’s school if I believe my child qualifies for an exemption to this new law?
For all exemptions, please contact your campus Section 504 facilitator, Special Education Diagnostician, or Assistant Principal.

Can my child have their cell phone at school events?
Cell phones are permitted after school hours and are permissible at school events.

What happens if a student violates this law?
Violation of this law may result in disciplinary action in accordance with the Denton ISD Code of Conduct.
