Bright and early on Wednesday morning, students at Newton Rayzor Elementary began to arrive on campus and quickly filled the bicycle rack before heading inside to start their day. The routine has become the norm at Newton Rayzor, as a growing number of students have started biking their way to school.
But on Wednesday, which was also National Bike and Roll to School Day, even more students strapped on their helmets and pedaled to class. The event, which is held locally by the North Central Texas Council of Governments (NCTOG), invites participants to celebrate the joy of active commuting while building a sense of community and school spirit.
Dr. Jamie Wilson, Denton ISD Superintendent of Schools, even joined in on the fun, riding his bike to Newton Rayzor alongside several students.
“Bike and Roll to School Day is a tremendous event that strengthens our partnerships with our families and community,” Dr. Wilson said. “In addition to promoting an active form of transportation, this event also allows us to educate our families and students about safety while commuting to school.”
Along with creating memorable moments with friends, families and the community, studies have also shown that active commuting helps students stay alert in class while imparting crucial lessons on safety for all.
Schools located in the NCTCOG 12-county metropolitan planning area that hosted a Bike and Roll to School event can also enter to win free safety-themed giveaways and new bikes for their students.
