Workshop Items

Discussion of Budget 2022-2023
Dr. Scott Niven, chief financial officer and deputy superintendent, and Jennifer Stewart, director of finance, presented the Board of Trustees with a budget planning calendar for the 2022-2023 school year. This budget planning calendar is preliminary before the final data comes in from the state level. March discussions will focus on the debt service. The months of April and May will feature fiscal year projections, including looking at estimated property values. The adoption of the proposed budget will take place during the final board meeting in June.

Discussion of Employee Benefits and Property Casualty Insurance
Chris Bomberger, executive director of benefits, child nutrition and risk management, presented an update on the 2021-2022 open enrollment of employee benefits, the status of medical plan offerings for upcoming open enrollment for 2022-2023 benefits, along with an update on the Winter Storm Uri property and contents progress.

As the district transitions to a new medical insurance provider, moving away from TRS-Active Care, for next year staff is making visits to campuses to explain the change. 

Discussion of K-8 Virtual Academy Update
Caleb Leath, Principal of the K-8 Virtual Academy, provided information regarding the current status and future of the Denton ISD K-8 Virtual Academy. Mr. Leath provided an overview of the current enrollment in the K-8 Virtual Academy as well as the K-8 Virtual Academy for the 2022-2023 school year. As of February 1, 2022, the total enrollment was 283 students. With the current staff the Virtual Academy can handle 232 students, K-5 and 150 students, grades 6 – 8.

COVID Update 
Susannah O’Bara provided the Board with the most recent update of student/staff Covid cases and the information from the Denton County Health Department.


2021-2022 Attendance Reporting - Period 3
Angela Ricks, Director of Student Support Services provided the Board with the campus and district ADA percentages for the 3rd Reporting Period of the 2021-2022 school year (November 8, 2021, through December 17, 2021) and to compare this data to prior years. School districts have reported to TEA that attendance rate declines continue to occur due to COVID during the spring semester. As a result, the TEA is exploring options to ensure school systems will not experience significant financial difficulties and the agency has temporarily closed the low attendance waiver.

There are 25 instructional days in this 3rd Reporting Period. The district ADA % for 2021-2022 Reporting Period 3 is 94.41%, this is a decrease from last school year when the ADA % was 95.47%.
