Safety & Security

  • Texas House Bill 3 requires an armed officer on every campus; however, there is a shortage of School Safety Officers across the state. Every Denton ISD campus has a School Safety Officer (SSO) or Student Resource Officer (SRO).

The district spends more than $7 million on safety and security, including armed officers on each campus, while receiving $2.2 million from the state. This leaves the district with a funding gap of more than $5 million annually.

Support a Safe Learning Environment

  • Safety & Security Officer

According to the Texas Association of School Boards, it costs about $80,000 to place a resource officer at one campus.

If Prop A passes

  • Proposition A provides funding to support competitive salaries for School Safety Officers and to meet the requirements of HB3.

If Prop A does not pass

  • Prop A= Safety & Security Upgrades

The implications of HB3 are that funds that may have been allocated to staff salary increases would be used to fund additional legally required police positions at campuses.
