Dr. Scott Niven, Deputy Superintendent
Dr. Scott Niven began serving as the Deputy Superintendent of the Denton Independent School District in July 2021. In this role, he acts in the absence of the superintendent in all decision-making and district/school operations.
He joined the district in February 2020 as the Chief Financial Officer. leading the Business Services Division that includes Budget, Bond Purchasing, Child Nutrition Services, Construction Fund Management, Elections, Employee Benefits, Employee Payroll, General Finance, Grant Fund Management, Insurance, Investments, Purchasing, Travel, Records Management, Risk Management and Workers’ Compensation.
The State of Texas has honored Denton ISD with the School FIRST’s (Financial Integrity Rating System of Texas) highest distinction for more than ten years. Amidst the fast student population growth, Denton ISD has earned the AA rating by Standard & Poor’s and Fitch Financial Rating Services.
Dr. Niven brings 26 years of financial leadership to the district, including serving the previous 17 years as a superintendent of schools in three smaller school systems, two in North Texas. He was instrumental in the successful management of the capital improvement plans and bond funding for building projects as part of his duties in Allen, Red Oak and Texarkana ISDs.
Dr. Niven, a native Texan, spent the first six years of his career as a senior staff accountant for Thomas & Thomas, CPA, PLLC in Texarkana. In 1994, he was named the Director of Business Operations for Texarkana ISD and was promoted to Assistant Superintendent for Business and Support Operations where he served until 2003.
Dr. Niven earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from The University of Arkansas and his master’s degree in Educational Administration from Texas A&M University - Texarkana. He received his doctoral degree from Texas A&M University – Commerce in 2012. He and his family live in Lantana.
