Meet Our Executive Director of Special Education

    Debbie RoybalDebbie Roybal has served as Denton Independent School District’s executive director of special education since 2010, spearheading the district’s programs and services for more than 3,000 students with disabilities.

    Mrs. Roybal oversees special education support personnel at every school in the district, providing guidance and analyzing data to provide each campus with the necessary resources for quality, effective and efficient programming for students. Additionally, Mrs. Roybal ensures that Denton ISD and its schools are in compliance with rules, regulations, laws, policies, procedures and guidelines set across the local, state or federal level.

    Beyond her own department’s staff, Mrs. Roybal also provides training regarding special education issues to campus administrators. She also collaborates with the academics, bilingual and curriculum departments to ensure the needs of students with disabilities are best met.

    Prior to joining Denton ISD, Mrs. Roybal spent 2009 to 2010 at Arlington ISD as its director of special education. In this role, she provided direct supervision, support and leadership to 15 special education coordinators across its district. Before this, she spent 10 years at the Region XI Education Service Center in Fort Worth, where she provided leadership and supervision to educational specialist assigned to special education and social programs. This role saw her work with school districts across the region to support their special education initiatives.

    With more than 30 years as an educational professional, Mrs. Roybal has a wealth of experience from California, New Mexico and Texas. She brings roughly 10 years of experience as a teacher, giving her a classroom perspective in addition to her leadership background.

    Mrs. Roybal received her bachelor’s degree in education from Eastern New Mexico University and her master’s degree in special education from the University of New Mexico. She also has certification in a variety of educational and management areas obtained from Eastern New Mexico University.
